GHOSTS OF MAYFLOWER: A PENNHURST HAUNTING : MAYFLOWER HALL: ENTITY?

MAYFLOWER HALL: ENTITY?

Working in the Mayflower Hall Building at Pennhurst State School & Hospital is and has always been a fascinating experience.

This is a picture I had taken in October 2016. It was taken in the Mayflower Hall building, 2nd floor. A female employee is walking into the main Hallway, just off the day or common room. If you look at the doorway across from her, you will notice what appears to be a large figure with a face. Now this room is roped off, not only in the hallway but also across the doorway. The room is also void of furniture, except for a filing cabinet, not seen from this angle.
Customers aren't allowed into this room.

So who or what is standing near the entrance, appearing to be peeking out into the hall?

Currently, Pennhurst is used as a Halloween Attraction. Ghost Hunt is located in the Mayflower Building.

Mayflower is known for its paranormal actvity.

Mayflower Hall is just one of the many buildings still standing at the old Pennhurst State School and Hospital. Pennhurst was opened in 1908-1987

PENNHURST: 2016: ORB

BLUE ORB

The catwalk at the old Pennhurst State School & Hospital can be rather creepy at night. This part of the catwalk is just behind the Quaker building. The area to the left is thick with foliage and trees - to condensed to even walk in the area. A staff member has been guarding this part of the walkway during the annual Halloween entertainment. This member has reported seeing shadows in this area. He also said he feels like something is watching him.  But the worst part for this gentleman is the night he was touched on the shoulder by an unseen hand. Clearly, it had unnerved him.

Customers have also gotten pictures of orbs and faces in the trees.

So, that being said, I stopped and took a couple of pictures in this area. I captured a blue orb, seemingly near the railing. This orb then took flight and fluttered off into the trees. This is the four pictures I managed to capture. There was no one else around when I took these pictures. It was late at night.

Pennhurst is a fascinating place to visit. The entire property has a haunting, serene quality that can be felt by many visitors. I can describe it as the past seemingly merging with the present - even if for just a moment.

Pennhurst State School and Hosptial was originally opened 1908-1987. It sat empty for many, many years.

GHOSTS OF MAYFLOWER: OCT 21, 2016

A toy left over from Pennhurst State School

Friday, October 21, 2016

With the ending of the summerlike weather, Pennhurst took on a chilly wind. The temperatures dropped and the leaves scattered. Along with the change, an eerie feeling crept into the Mayflower Hall building.  (aka Ghost Hunt)

During the evening, I was standing in Mayflower’s foyer, talking to entering groups. In mid-sentence, a breath of air rustled the back of my hair. It was as if someone was standing behind me and blew into my neck. Thinking it was a co-worker messing with me, I turned sharply around, only to be staring into the empty hallway. Unnerved, I continued onward. However, that was not the end of it. Several times throughout the evening, my head was either stroked by an unseen hand or my hair was tugged.

But I was not the only target of this mischievous spirit. A co-worker reported he had been tapped on the head. Another woman on 2nd floor reported a similar experience.

Other customers claimed to see moving orbs with the naked eye. Some boasted of either being touched or hearing voices close to their ears.

All in all- it was a great night for ghost hunting.

Pennhurst Asylum is located in Spring City, Pennsylvania.

MAYFLOWER HALL: 2016

MAYFLOWER HALL: PENNHURST Pa

On Saturday evening, I captured a picture of the little girl ghost that roams the Mayflower Hall Building at Pennhurst Asylum. She is standing on the steps that lead to 2nd-floor.  There also appears to be another spirit to the left of the girl, who blends in with the railing.  A feeling washed over me that something was standing on the steps and I went with it and took the picture. We were closing up the building for the  night.

This isn't the first time a girl in white has been seen in Mayflower. In fact, it is the norm. For the past six years, people have been either seeing her or getting pictures of her during paranormal hunts or at  Pennhurst's annual Halloween attraction.

MAYFLOWER HALL: PENNHURST 2016

Pennhurst Asylum: 2016

History:

In the early 1900's the state of Pennsylvania's decided to separate and hide away that which offended society - apparently people that didn't fit the "Norm." These people were thought to be a menace to society and were considered possible future criminals. This led to the creation of Pennhurst State school and Hospital. The plan was to segregate and institutionalize these "retarded" people. School and house them. Teach a trade. And in some cases, perhaps even cure them.

Pennhurst housed physically and mentally handicapped individuals. Also added to the population were orphans and epileptics. Overcrowded conditions, limited medical advances and lack of staff took its toll on the residents, who desperately needed more one on one care. With lack, of supervision, abuse, became commonplace. Overwhelmed staff often quit. Requests for additional funding was denied or delayed by the state. In many ways, Pennhurst was on its own - a boat without a paddle, filled with rusty holes and sinking fast.

With time decay took root, both in the buildings and in the lives of the individuals, who were all but forgotten. In the 1960's change was in the works. Lawsuits and revelations.

Thankfully Pennhurst closed down in 1987.

Today

In the fall, for a period of about six weekends, Pennhurst Asylum opens its doors for its annual Halloween attraction. This involves the use of the Administration Building, portions of the tunnels and the Mayflower Hall Building.  Although not ever one is pleased with the haunted attraction, inviting the public to Pennhurst does shed light on Pennhurst's past - be it good or bad.

Mayflower Hall

Halloween is a time of fun and pretend. Getting scared is a thrill for most people. But then there are those who don't care for a scare. Ghost Hunt is held in the Mayflower Hall Building. This attraction offers patrons the chance to see the building without actors jumping out to scare. Ghost Hunt is just that. A Ghost hunt. And if you don't believe in ghosts, perhaps seeing the building in its rustic condition will be a scare enough.

Pennhurst Paracon 2: Day Two

The Mayflower Hall Building located at the old Pennhurst State School & Hosptial in Spring City Pennsylvania was busy day two of Pennhurst Paracon 2. The heat and humidy didn't stop patrons from finding their way throughout the huge building, searching for that special something that might not be found in your average local store.

Vendors offered a variety of items for sale - many paranormal in nature.

People also got a chance to see the Mayflower Building up close and personal. This included taking a tour of the 3rd floor and basement.

Lectures were also offered in the basement.

PENNHURST PARACON 2

Due to its 2015 success, Pennhurst Paracon returned again in 2016 with a two-day event.

The first day of Pennhurst Paracon 2016 was hot but dry. A nice crowd of folks showed up to explore the Mayflower Hall and Devon Buildings. Vendors were located on 1st and 2nd floors of the Mayflower building selling their paranormal services, clothing, jewelry, books, toys, ghost hunting equipment, etc. Paranormal lectures were given in Mayflower's basement.

This scene was taken of the catwalk between Dietary and Administration buildings. People enjoyed the beautiful weather, leisurely walking around and taking pictures.

MAYFLOWER HALL: PENNHURST Pa

This picture shows only a portion of the huge Mayflower Hall building located at Pennhurst State School and Hospital. The second-floor window appears to be open in this picture, which isn't unusual due to the paranormal activity that  lingers in this area. This segment of the building is divided into four sections. Half walls separate the rooms. Orbs, shadows, voices, and touching are all common experiences for folks visiting this haunted location.

During the past couple of Halloween seasons, this distinctive window has opened on its own several times, despite being nailed shut. Photographs of this   area often reveal faces or shadowy forms. Orbs are also commonplace. Some are colorful, green or bluish in nature.

A closed insane asylum lies quietly rotting in the bleak North-Atlantic sun. Yet, it seems that some of its residents, both children and adult, are still inside. The Pennhurst Asylum is one of America's most haunted residences. Its history is dark and traumatic, with most of the patients suffering painful abuse and mistreatment at the hands of the staff. Tamera Lawrence brings us into this dark world to experience this haunting past and wonder about the present residents in her book Ghosts of Mayflower. With enough facts, stories, and insights to turn even the toughest critic white with fear, this is a ghost story that is truly worthy of the name.

You can tell that Tamera Lawrence spent a lot of time researching this project. The history and attention to detail is impeccable and very informative. The description of each haunting is wonderful and eerie. You feel as if you are really there, and that at any second something is going to jump out and grab you. The mysterious and scary nature of the stories have a deeper impact, knowing that this is no work of fiction, and that these experiences or many like them have been shared by real people. Any fan of ghost hunting and the like will be thrilled by this haunting book. It's up to you if you believe in the captivating stories within, or if you know that the dead stay buried. Either way, Ghosts of Mayflower is a fun read for anyone who enjoys ghost stories

Into the dark: Mayflower Building

There is always that awkward moment when you enter the third-floor hallway in the Mayflower Hall Building, Pennhurst. You can't help but stare down the seemingly endless hallway, searching with your flashlight for something - anything - out of the norm. The hope is, of course, that you won't see anything standing there. But even if you can't see something with your naked eye, you still have the feeling that you're not alone.

This is me as I have one of those worried moments

PENNHURST: GHOST ASYLUM EPISODE

Just sharing this picture from last year's October 2015 episode of Ghost Asylum.  These guys (The Tennessee Wraith Chasers) were a lot of fun and true ghost enthusiasts. But despite their best efforts to help and/or rescue a trapped spirit, I don't think they had much luck. And personally speaking, I don't believe the ghosts of Pennhurst want to leave. They like it there.

But in any event, Pennhurst State School & Hospital will continue to be a draw for ghost hunters and thrill seekers for years to come.

Mayflower Hall: Penhurst

This is a room in the basement of the Mayflower Hall Building, Pennhurst. As you can see there are toys scattered about. The items are not original to the building but were put there by various paranormal groups in the hopes of connecting with a child spirit. But the truth is that Mayflower Hall was a men's dormitory, not a children's ward.

The basement beneath Mayflower is huge, cut up into various rooms. The basement also held a bathroom and laundry facilities. These rooms were used during the state school's operation for various activities.

Mayflower's basement is attached to the tunnel system, which leads to most of the other buildings.

Cold, dark and creepy, Mayflower's basement holds a lot of paranormal activity. Service men have even fled the basement in fear, leaving their tools behind.

Below is a picture of the dividers that once held toilets.

MAYFLOWER HALL: CHAIRS

Rubber chairs are situated on the 1st and 2nd floors of the Mayflower Hall building, Pennhurst.

As you can see in the picture, it's hard to tell what color they are or were.  Surprisingly, the chairs have held up over the years. Guests coming into the building will often sit on these chairs, oblivious to the grime. During ghost hunt, a few rowdy patrons will shove or drag the chairs around the common rooms. Still, the chairs prevail with the abuse.

If only today's furniture would endure this well.

MAYFLOWER HALL: PENNHURST

Known for its paranormal activity, the Mayflower Hall building always keeps me guessing. Having worked in this building for the Pennhurst haunt for five years has been an amazing experience due to the unexpected events that often occur.

Over the course of the years, I have witnessed shadow people, orbs and have heard unexplained voices. I have had my hair touched, backed into someone who wasn't there and have tripped over something invisible in the main hallway. (felt like a body)

I believe something had followed me home and had later returned to this building. (because of photos)

I had also witnessed an apparition of a young teenager walking down the main hallway. This was the most unnerving of all my experiences because he had allowed me to see him. He had entered the room across from me and had stood between the two windows, staring at me. At the time, I froze in terror, not sure what to do. He faded away.

My paranormal experiences don't keep me from working in Mayflower. I'm  intrigued by the invisible life within this building but know better than to let myself get to close. Instead, I protect myself with my faith. For without it, I could never work in this building.

In any event, the photo of the room above was taken on the 2nd floor of Mayflower. The windows don't have glass. I believe I have captured something in the right-hand corner of the window, peeking in at me. This was not part of the wall. And since I know it haunted, it's not hard to believe it was an entity.

Also, check out the orb. There is a lot of dust in Mayflower, (fooling some guests) but there are true orbs. I have seen them with the naked eye and so has customers.

TINICUM BUILDING: PENNHURST State School & Hospital

Although I have never been inside this building, it stands beside Mayflower Hall and Quaker Hall. Overgrown with foliage, this building holds an air of mystery to it. At night, paranormal activity stirs around this building. Shadowy figures have been seen stirring through the trees and growth.

But during the fall Pennhurst 2015 haunt season, something else emerged from the foliage surrounding this building - a cat. Often skittish, this feline would sit near this building watching the Pennhurst Haunt in action. Taking pity on the kitty, staff, including myself, left food out for the cat who snuck out to take a bite or two.

In any event, this cat feared only the living.

If by chance she saw a ghost, she wasn't letting on.
