ASYLUM

Recently,  my  book "Asylum" had been chosen to be read by this awesome group of people "The Novel Tourist" from Philadelphia. This book club group completed the historical tour of the Old Pennhurst State School & Hospital grounds & museum. Afterward, we met up at the Spring Hollow Golf Club for lunch and a great chat about Pennhurst, the paranormal & a bit of history.

The group had been very enthusiastic about "Asylum" and it was great to receive feedback on the book.

On another note, for anyone who has read the book, you will understand that while on the tour, this group had discovered a boot laying on one of the staircases, which gave them a start and a nervous laugh. They thought at first maybe it had been staged. Nope. Just a weird fluke.

In any event, I want to thank this awesome group. If you are interested in reading Asylum, the book is on Amazon & other major online retail outlets.

ASYLUM

A taut psychological thriller set in the eerie remnants of an abandoned asylum.

In 2012,Kyle Hampton leads a happy life with his wife and young daughter, but he’s plagued by memories of his childhood in Rose Hill Asylum, where he was born. There, abuse was rampant, and scores of children died over the years before it was shut down 28 years ago. Many years later, he and his best friend, Randy, a fellow former asylum resident, still find themselves drawn back to the closed-down building, which retains its sinister atmosphere. Lawrence paints these visits vividly, and the asylum itself becomes the work’s most fully realized locale as the friends’ visits become increasingly unsettling. Throughout, the author also successfully intersperses this story with Kyle’s troubling recollections—particularly of his encounters with bullies and of the fact that his younger brother, Roy, was not adopted with him; Kyle escaped the brutal asylum, but his sibling didn’t, leaving him guilt-ridden. There’s an underdeveloped plotline involving Kyle’s difficult relationship with his wife, as well. However, Lawrence also takes readers into the mind of a serial killer known as Stitches—a man who haunts the asylum, dressed as a clown, and currently preys upon local women; as the killer slowly makes his existence known to Kyle, a tense cat-and-mouse game plays out. The author manages to keep the villain shrouded in mystery by carefully unveiling his connections to the asylum over the course of the story. Throughout the novel, including in Stitches’ horrific monologues, the author presents a searing indictment of the mental health and asylum system in the United States over several decades. Action scenes dominate the work’s latter sections, but the novel’s strongest aspects are its forbidding atmosphere and its damning depiction of what happens to kids who fall through cracks in the system.

A well-paced and creepy novel with a strong message.
Although fiction, this book is based on the true historical location Pennhurst State School. Some of what my characters experienced were in fact the norm at the time.

Readers Favorite Book : Review of Asylum

Reviewed By Ankita Shukla for Readers’ Favorite

Tamera Lawrence's Asylum is a nail-biting thriller whose story revolves around Kyle. Like all the other resident kids of the Rose Hill Asylum, Kyle also silently wished to get adopted. This was the only way to escape the violent bullying and darkness of the asylum. When he turned nine, his wish was granted. However, this blessing came with a complication: his new parents were unable to adopt his younger brother, Roy. As much as he wanted to take care of his brother, he could not pass on this opportunity to finally have a family. After many years Kyle got married and had a baby daughter but the guilt of leaving Roy behind in that dingy and dark place gnawed at him. Therefore, when his friend, Randy, proposed the idea of exploring the abandoned Rose Hill Asylum, he couldn't resist the temptation. Unbeknownst to him, he brought back from that daunting asylum something more than mere memories. And this "something" will stop at nothing to get revenge.

Since the entire plot of Asylum rests on the Rose Hill Asylum, it was important to create an unsettling image of the place that holds the plot together. Everything from the tunnels to the dark and damp rooms instills a fear of the unknown in readers. Whenever Kyle crawls inside the tunnels, it is impossible to breathe. Tamera Lawrence has used the right words and emotions to hold her audience. Her storytelling captivates and dares the reader to put down the book. Kyle and Beth's arguments that go from zero to infinity in a matter of minutes will resonate with a majority of married couples. There is no lack of love between the couple, yet the marital responsibilities and Kyle's need for a break from these duties produce arguments that are quite entertaining.

The characters, whether side or main ones, have certain unique attributes that make them memorable. The antagonist, with his quirky dialogues, strange expressions, and dangerous mood swings, has come out as a spine-chilling villain. The psychology of an orphan child, especially their fear of not getting adopted, could not have been described any better. A married man's jealousy over his bachelor friend's free lifestyle and vice versa is another absorbing inclusion in Asylum. Without giving away spoilers, I can surely say that after reading Asylum, the phrase, "if you twist, you'll get stitched," will never be the same.
