THE HAUNTED PLANE: MAYFLOWER HALL PENNHURST

FISHER-PRICE AIRPLANE

Fisher-Price Plane: Part 1

Can you remember owning a Fisher-Price airplane as a child? Perhaps you have forgotten the airplane over the years. But on the second floor of the Mayflower Hall building, a Fisher-Price plane still exists. Found in the basement, this Fisher-Price plane is a left over icon from the former Pennhurst State School and Mental Hospital. It is an odd site in the creepy atmosphere and evokes pity and childhood memories on Mayflower guests. Countless people have stated during the annual Ghost Hunt that they too had owned the same airplane.

The Mayflower Fisher-Price airplane is special indeed. Not only have people claimed to have seen it move, but shadows or creepy images have shown up in pictures besides the airplane. People have asserted that while touching the Mayflower plane, they have felt sick or suddenly felt icy cold. One employee said she had been pushed while touching the plane.

I have on occasion handled the Mayflower airplane, mainly to protect it from being stolen.  Thankfully, the Ghosts of Mayflower leave me alone. Perhaps they know I am watching over their favorite toy.

Whatever you think, please look for the plane if you visit the Mayflower Hall Building, or ghost hunt during the 2015 Halloween Season. Take a picture of the plane on your cell phone. You never know what might show up.

Pennhurst State School and Hospital

Pennhurst State School and Mental Hospital was originally known as The Eastern Pennsylvania State Institution for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic. Opening in 1908, Pennhurst was meant to run as a society in itself, separating the mental and physically handicapped from "Normal" society. It was believed in the early 1900s that people with disabilities would grow to become future criminals. The gene pool had to be stopped. Segregation became the aim. It was also believed that these people could be cured with the right treatment. One could only imagine of what that treatment consisted of in 1908 and on upwards.  Children as young as four could be dropped off at Pennhurst. This included delinquents and orphans.

The state of Pennsylvania created this gateway called Pennhurst for the unfortunate and then failed to maintain it. With inadequate funding, staff and resources were limited - leading to abuse and neglect.Thankfully, Pennhurst closed down in 1986.

With its tainted history, Pennhurst still stands as a testament of society's failure to protect its innocent children.

NOTE:

Today, parts of Pennhurst are used for a Halloween Scare during the fall season - Pennhurst Asylum. The Ghost Hunt (one of the attractions) offers a visitor the chance to explore the Mayflower Hall Building looking for spirits or ghosts.

Pennhurst is located in Spring City, Pa.

Pennhurst State School and Mental Hospital opened in 1908 and closed in 1986. What was intended to be a society for people with mental and physcial handicaps was a failure.

With over 25 buildings, Pennhurst is a huge complex.  Today the sad remains are a testament of the failings of Pennhurst and the remembrance of the precious children it once held.

PENNHURST: Walkway exit next to Quaker Building

With the vivid colors of autumn and the crisp pungent air, the catwalk at Pennhurst is hauntingly beautiful. This picture depicts the walkway leading into the parking lot between the Quaker Building (left) and the Mayflower Hall Building.

Pennhurst is located in Spring City, Pa and is currently being used as a haunted attraction.
